Danny Welbeck won’t fire Arsenal to the title, claims ex-striker

Danny Welbeck won't fire Arsenal to the Premier League title this season, says Alan Smith

Alan Smith does not believe that Danny Welbeck’s arrival at Arsenal will transform the Gunners into Premier League title contenders.

The 23-year-old England international signed a five-year deal with the north London club last week after the striker was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

But former Gunners striker Smith still feels that Arsenal are still some way behind Manchester City and Chelsea in the race for the top-flight crown this term.

Asked if Welbeck’s arrival makes Arsenal title contenders, Smith told talkSPORT: “I don’t think so. In all fairness, I still think they’re short behind Chelsea and Manchester City.

“I would have liked to of seen a holding midfielder come in. Whether Arsène Wenger was after one at any point, I don’t know. Sami Khedira was mentioned along the way, but he’s [Wenger] already got the likes of Mikel Arteta.

“I don’t think that’s a natural role for Arteta, I don’t think it’s his best role. I think Arsenal suffer at times when Arteta is playing in that role.

“I don’t think he’s got the legs to do it these days and that is an area where they’re not going to be strong enough.”
