Capital One Cup Report: Liverpool Advance Into Last 16

Liverpool advanced to the next  round of the Capital One Cup after beating Middlesbrough 14-13 on penalties, after it ended 2-2 after 120 minutes.

Brendan Rodgers gave Rickie Lamber his first start for Liverpool, while Raheem Sterling, Luis Enrique and Kolo Toure were also included the starting line-up.

Middlesbrough were presented with first chance of the game in the ninth minute, as Grant Leadbitter picked out Daniel Ayala, who could only header straight at Simon Mignolet.

A minute later and Liverpool went ahead, as 17-year-old Jordan Rossiter fired home with an effort from 35-yards out on Reds' debut.

Adam Lallana came close in the 25th, the midfielder did well to create space for himself before firing a long range effort just wide of the upright.

Tomlin nearly brought Boro level just before the halftime break with a long range effort that forced Mignolet into a low save.

The Championship outfit then leveled matters in the 62nd minute, as Adam Reach rose highest to head past Mignolet from close range.

Mignolet came to Liverpool's rescue in the 79th minute, as he pulled off a fine save to keep out Adam Clayton's long range effort.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the final 10 minutes, as the game headed to extra-time.

Liverpool then took the lead int he 108th minute, as Suso Fernandez lashed home from 12 yards out, after some good work by Luis Enrique down the left flank.

However, Middlesbrough leveled matters in the final minutes of extra time through Patrick Bamford's penalty, after a foul by Kolo Toure.
