Champions League: Immobile, Aubameyang Down Disappointing Gunners

Goals from Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw Borussia Dortmund defeat Arsenal 2-0 in their UEFA Champions League opener at Signal Iduna Park.

Both sides were missing players through injury, most notably Marco Reus and Mats Hummels for Dortmund, while Arsenal's Mathieu Debuchy has been ruled out for two months.

Dortmund should have opened the scoring in the 29th minute, as Ciro Immobile broke free down the left, before lashing a the ball across the face of goal, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan managed to sky his effort over the bar from six-yards out.

Abumayeng almost opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, but a fine save from Wojciech Szczęsny denied the Gabonese strike from close range.

Danny Welbeck came close to giving Arsenal the lead in the 41st minute, the striker latched onto a pass from Aaron Ramsey before firing just wide of the upright.

The hosts went ahead just before the halftime break, as Immobile's great solo run was matched with a composed finish from the edge of the area.

Three minutes after the restart and Dortmund doubled their lead, as Aubameyang latched onto ball from Kevin Grosskreutz, before rounding Szczesny and slotting into the back of the net.

Mkhitaryan should have added a third in the 73rd minute, as the midfielder pounced on an error from Mikel Arteta, but managed to place his effort over the crossbar from 12-yards out.

Welbeck had a chance to pull one back for Arsenal in the 75th minute, the striker managed to out-muscle his marker before firing over from close range.

Arsene Wenger's men struggled to get going in the second half and failed to create enough openings to find the breakthrough.
