Chanpions League: Late Goal Hands Bayern Win

A 90th minute goal from Jerome Botaeng handed Bayern Munich a slender 1-0 win over Manchester City in their Group E, UEFA Champions League match at the Allianz-Arena on Wednesday night.

Bayern started like a house on fire and should have opened the scoring in the first minute when Thomas Muller broke behind the defence and rounded the keeper, but he fired his shot into the side netting from a couple of yards out.

City, though, quickly found their footing in the game and had their first effort on goal in the 13th minute when Edin Dzeko unleashed a powerful shot from an acute angle on the left, but Manuel Neuer made a good stop.

It was all Bayern after that, however, but they constantly found goalkeeper Joe Hart in their way.

In the 19th minute Muller met a cross from the left, but his header was superbly tipped round the post by Hart.

A couple of minutes later Mario Gotze met a low cross form the right, but his 12-yard shot was acrobatically stopped by Hart as well.

In the 32nd minute David Alaba tried his luck from the edge of the box, but again the Bayern player’s effort was brilliantly saved by Hart.

Four minutes later Alaba played Robert Lewandowski through on goal and he managed to round the keeper, but was forced wide and saw his shot strike the side-netting from six-yards out.

The half ended 0-0.

Bayern continued to dominate the second half, but they struggled to create a clear-cut scoring chance.

We came close to the opening goal in the 71st minute when Hart, surprisingly, spilled a 30-yard shot from Rafinha straight into the path of Muller, but he fumbled his effort wide from close range.

Three minutes from time Hart came to his side’s rescue again when he was at full stretch to turn a 30-yard shot from Boateng around the post.

City hearts, though, were broken in the 90th minute when Boateng fired a thunderous volley into the top right corner of the net from the edge of the box to seal the 1-0 win.
