Champions League: Pique Hands Barca Winning Start

Gerard Pique scored the only goal of the game as Barcelona defeated Apoel Nicosia 1-0 in their opening UEFA Champions League group game at the Nou Camp.

Luis Enrique opted for youth in his starting line-up, handing starts to Sergi Samper and Sergi Roberto alongside Xavi Hernandez, while Munir El Haddadi retained his starting berth.

Messi came close to opening the scoring in the 13th minute, with a curling free-kick that forced goalkeeper Pardo into a low save.

Neymar then went close in the 21st minute, as the Brazilian was picked out by Messi on the edge of the area, before volleying just wide of the upright

Minutes later and Barcelona were in front, as as Gerard Pique headed home Lionel Messi' delightful free-kick.

Pardo was called into action to deny Messi once again, this time parrying the Argentine's close range effort out for a corner.

Barcelona took their foot off the pedal in the second half and never really showed any urgency to go and get the second goal.

The closest the Catalans came was in the 88th minute, Sandro Ramirez did well to turn his defender before firing just wide of the upright.

Barca comfortably saw out the rest of the match, as they maintain their unbeaten start to the season and are yet to concede a single goal.
