UEFA Champions League Report: Chelsea Stutter At Home
Chelsea wasted chance after chance in front of goal as they played to a 1-1 draw against Schalke 04 in a Group G, UEFA Champions League match at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
Chelsea dominated from the onset and made their pressure tell early on with the opening goal in the 11th minute courtesy of Cesc Fabregas.
Fabregas started the attack by winning the ball in midfield which allowed Eden Hazard to push forward before playing the Spaniard through on goal and he made no mistake with a deft finish from six-yards out, 1-0.
Schalke responded quite well after going behind and came close to drawing matters level ten minutes later when Julian Draxler drove a 22-yard shot inches over the crossbar.
In the 37th minute Fabregas should have doubled Chelsea’s lead, but he shot over from ten-yards out after Branislav Ivanovic played him into space.
Schalke had the last say of the half in added time after Draxler drove forward, beating two defenders before firing inches wide from the edge of the box.
Chelsea started the second half well and saw Didier Drogba break behind the Schalke defence on the hour mark, but with just the keeper to beat he fired the ball wide.
Two minutes later and Chelsea were made to pay for their missed opportunities as Schalke drew level.
Draxler created the goal after a swift counter-attack saw him play Klaas-Jan Huntelaar into space on the edge of the box and he produced a clinical finish to make the score 1-1.
Ten minutes later Draxler almost gave Schalke the lead, but he saw his thunderous long range shot tipped around the post by the keeper.
In the 77th minute Chelsea were bitterly unlucky not to find their second goal after a goalmouth scramble saw a Loic Remy effort cleared off the goalline by a Schalke defender.
Chelsea continued to press forward, but could not find the winning goal as the game ended all-square.
