  US President Barack Obama has said a surface-to-air missile fired from a rebel-held area in east Ukraine brought down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. The crash on Thursday killed all 298 people on board, including 80 children.

Breaking News President Obama says the plane was shot by a surface-to-air missile. "The shot was taken from territory that was controlled by the Russian separatists," he said.

"It's a gruesome scene," freelance journalist Noah Sneider said. "There's bodies splayed out through the fields. People said the plane kind of exploded in the air, and everything rained down in bits and pieces, the plane itself, the people inside." Stunned rescue workers and rebel fighters combed the area, Sneider said, planting sticks with white cotton ribbons where they found bodies in the fields. There are so many dead that it's unlikely the local morgue will be able to hold them all, Sneider said, even in a volatile region that's seen waves of death recently amid clashes between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists.

The international health community is also reeling from the loss of a number of their colleagues, including a revered AIDS researcher, who are believed to be amongst the passengers on the tragic flight. The victims were on their way to the International AIDS Conference that is scheduled to begin this weekend in Melbourne, Australia. They were flying from the Netherlands to Australia, via Kuala Lumpur. One of the victims is prominent Dutch scientist Joep Lange , a pioneer in HIV research and a former president of the International AIDS Society, which organizes the conference. His partner Jacqueline van Tongeren was also on the flight with him, says the Health[e] Foundation, co-founded by Lange. 'Weird to imagine that they are gone'

A fast-acting 3-year-old came to an elderly man’s rescue in Tennessee after he spotted the man trapped inside a hot car as temperatures inside the vehicle reached over 120 degrees. While waiting for his wife to come back from an event at the Vestal Baptist Church in Knoxville last Saturday, Bob King, 68, found himself trapped in his car after the doors automatically locked. “We’ve been having trouble with the door on this car since we bought it,” King told ABC News. After numerous cancer treatments and having suffered from two strokes in the past six months, Bob King was described as “in very bad shape” and “could barely see anything” by his wife, Jenny King.
